Many times you’ll feel that your Mac PC isn’t working with the same speed that it maintained when it was new. Virus infections, PC slow downs, hanging and freezing issues are some of the common issues faced by users, when their PC starts getting old. The technology becomes obsolete very soon, hence, you will be required to keep a check on your computer’s health and maintenance to ensure that it keeps on running smoothly. A lot of users are looking for the process of upgrading their Mac’s performance through increasing its RAM. Yes, it’s absolutely true that you can enhance the performance of your Mac devices by upgrading to some latest hardware that can make work easier and faster.

What is RAM and its advantages after upgrading?

RAM (Random Access Memory) is a special kind of temporary memory that is used by the CPU to hold information related to the current processes running on your device. It has been claimed by various tech experts that the more RAM you have, the better your PC will handle all the tasks. It might also interest you that adding a secondary RAM can eventually enhance the performance of your PC as well as the apps that you put it through on a daily basis.

A user can experience an immediate change in the performance in everything you do ranging from browsing the web to using heavy applications like Photoshop. It has also been observed that an extra RAM can’t increase your Internet connection speed but it will surely enable your browser to run smoother and perform things faster. So, if you’re experiencing applications lags, frequent crashes, hanging issues, delayed app or web page loading, and other related symptoms, then it’s quite possible that the time has come to upgrade the RAM of your system.

Can an upgraded RAM make my PC faster?

Users looking for a fast computer should immediately work on the two key areas namely, the processor speed and the RAM. An obsolete processor, an insufficient RAM, and an overheated device can immensely slow down your machine to a degraded level. Changing or taking care of these three attributes will not only save money that you’ll be required to spend on a new purchase but will also make you feel that you’ve bought a new computer. While upgrading your processors and RAM, look for the latest and widely acclaimed technological advancements that can empower your device with an improved productivity and functionality. You’ll be amazed at the power of this one simple, affordable upgrade as it will make your device work like a new one without giving much stress on your pockets and bank accounts.

How to find your new RAM?

This is the basic step that every Mac user should perform, before you go about buying new RAM. Knowing your system requirements and the type of RAM that will fit in is the most convenient and economic way of upgrading it with a best possible solution.

To find out what RAM your Mac requires, simply select ‘About This Mac’ from the Apple menu located on the top left of the screen. After clicking on ‘About This Mac,’ go to the ‘More Info’ section and navigate to ‘Memory’ to seek information about your current RAM.

As you can now see the type of RAM which your PC will accept, browse through various online sellers and market vendors to find a best RAM that suits your budget and technical requirements. Although, prices vary depending on manufacturer but you should compare at least 3-4 vendors to look for the one who offers the best deal. It is always recommended to stick to a particular brand or original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as their products are genuine and reliable.

Alternatively, you can also use the online portals to compare your high quality RAM with the other available options in the markets. These websites may also have a compatibility tool that can detect your system’s needs and recommend a compatible RAM that can be paired up with your device. Once you've selected your new RAM, make a purchase, and move on to installation process.

How to install a new RAM on your Mac?

Step 1: The first thing is to prepare the Mac for getting its RAM upgraded. You need to carefully remove screws from the back cover to reach the motherboard of your device. Use a suitable screwdriver, depending upon the type of screws used in the build of your PC and gently remove them from the outer cover.

It is really important to take note of where each screw came from because they might differ from others, depending on their position and type of grip that need to provide. Always ensure that you have disconnected everything from your Mac, including the power cord, external web cam, mouse, and other related components.

Step 2: Remove the cover and touch a metal surface in the interior of the PC to discharge any static from your body. It is recommended to use a small wrist band to prevent you from any static charges.

Step 3: Identify your Mac's RAM from the motherboard, holding various crucial things such as fan, integrated circuits (ICs), hard drive, and other relevant stuff. Once you’re able to locate the RAM (a rectangular-shaped item) in your Mac, press the embedded tabs by holding them from either side.

Step 4: Now, remove the existing RAM pushing the tabs out, which will cause the RAM to pop up. The RAM module should not be left until it is fully released. As soon as you’ll feel that the memory is free by its notches, remove it from its slot by holding it from the edges. It’s quite possible that there will be two memory modules, hence, remove the other module as well by doing exactly the same like you did with the first.

Step 5: Insert the new RAM by carefully lining it up with the RAM slot. Tilt the card up to and drop the RAM into the slot with two fingers press down firmly and evenly. If the memory card has been inserted correctly, you will feel a firm click from the slot and you can confirm it by trying to gently pull out the RAM. In case the card does not fit, do not force it rather check again to ensure that you have inserted it in the right way around. Repeat the same process with the other module as well and you’re done.

Step 6: Put back the cover, tighten those screws back up, plug your cables back in, and reboot the device. It might take a few minutes, but as soon as you’ll reach the apps interface or launch a program, you’ll notice that your PC now runs faster. Moreover, you can also observe that your machine can now multi-task more apps at the given period of time.

Upgrading your RAM should not void the warranty on your Mac but it is always recommended to keep the original one with you at a safer place. Suppose you mess up with any of the other components in the process and the company may decide not to treat your device under warranty. At that point of time, having the original component can convince them to accept the fact that you’ve just replaced the RAM and haven’t played with it by installing non-standard components in it.

Keeping the original RAM can avoid many other probable issues that may arise when a company’s official engineer tests your product for other faults. Go to the Apple menu, click ‘About This Mac’ and look under ‘Memory’ to check if your system has identified the new RAM or not. Once the new RAM is installed and accepted by your device, you can enjoy faster browsing, multitasking in apps, smooth function of even heavy programs and uninterrupted gaming experience.
